The ‘Lost Works’ of Don MacGregor

RESTORING THE DON MACGREGOR SCULPTURE COLLECTION

By Dan Butler BFA, Artisan   Houston, Texas

The late sculptor Don MacGregor was well known in the central Texas triangle during the 1980's and early 90's, until his death in 1994.

MacGregor's studio resided for many years in a turn of the century two story storefront in downtown Bellville, Texas. He was always working, but his door was always open to everyone who dropped by and became fascinated with what he was doing. In fact his studio became a local 'hangout' for art enthusiasts. Many people, including former mayor of Bellville, and entrepeneur Roy Champiomont spent many hours there. Regular visitors often brought musical instruments, played card games. Some studied sculpture with him and were inspired to take up sculpting themselves.

Don was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1993. He passed away in 1994. Roy got a phone call from the executor of MacGregor's estate, informing him that Don had left him his entire body of work.

Much of the work was unfinished. One work in clay, a bust of one of MacGregor's 'mountain men' series, was recently finished. It was posthumously titled, 'The Last One', by friends. This last work of Don's was taken to a foundry to be moulded, and several bronze castings were made for Don's closest friends

No one was available with the expertise to complete the unfinished works, so that remained in box storage on Mr. Champiomont's property for over a decade.

In February of 2005, Mr. Champiomont contracted me to restore his MacGregor collection. I also served as foundry consultant, and we quickly put together a full lost wax casting operation at Roy's property on Marks Road near Hwy 6.

The foundry is now operational, and I have completed 20 of MacGregor’s revived 80’s and 90’s sculptures in bronze. I am currently restoring 10 additional unfinished MacGregor works in clay and wax, and will cast those in bronze by July 4th.

This last group of never finished sculptures were from MacGregor’s last period, when he was dying. In my opinion they are his best work, the fruition of his career as a sculptor. None of these were cast in bronze during MacGregor’s lifetime. My casting molding and casting of them will be the first.
